The KD kids have been subitizing. `Subitizing' is the strategy of not counting a group but relying on your intuition to know how many objects the group contains. As you look at the group, you suddenly know how many objects it contains (Natural Maths Strategies for parents). We subitize dots on plates, we roll dice and subitize. Sometimes we use the `Subitize tree' app on the ipads and subitize - this is one of our favourite ways to practise.
We like to read and recite the rhyme before we play the game (we do a groovy dance to the drum beat too!)
You can subitize at home too. Dice games are an excellent way to practise. Roll the dice, then cover with your hand. See if you can answer these questions before checking if you are correct.
What did you see? eg. "I saw 4".
How did you see it? eg. "I saw two at the top and two at the bottom" or "I saw one in each corner and I knew that made 4".
Have fun subitizing!
