The KD kids have been subitizing. `Subitizing' is the strategy of not counting a group but relying on your intuition to know how many objects the group contains. As you look at the group, you suddenly know how many objects it contains (Natural Maths Strategies for parents). We subitize dots on plates, we roll dice and subitize. Sometimes we use the `Subitize tree' app on the ipads and subitize - this is one of our favourite ways to practise. We like to read and recite the rhyme before we play the game (we do a groovy dance to the drum beat too!) You can subitize at home too. Dice games are an excellent way to practise. Roll the dice, then cover with your hand. See if you can answer these questions before checking if you are correct.
What did you see? eg. "I saw 4". How did you see it? eg. "I saw two at the top and two at the bottom" or "I saw one in each corner and I knew that made 4". Have fun subitizing! We have been making patterns with many different things - beads, links, peg boards, pictures and even ourselves! We have also used the computers and ipads to help us. We love playing maths games to practise our skills. We read `Mr McGee' by Pamela Allen. We got such a surprise when Mr McGee sent us some slinky apples to munch on. We are having fun and learning more everyday!
Can you think of any words that begin with 'm'?
We learnt all about `n' today. We also learnt a new `sight word'. Sight words are words that we just need to learn to say quickly when we see them. Sometimes Ms Dowling says `See it, say it!' We are getting very good at recognising these words quickly. Can you guess what the new sight word we learnt today is?
Today we learnt all about the letter `i'. We also played this maths game to practise numbers before and after. Choose the number range that you want to work on. You might also like to try some of the maths games on `sites for kids' page at the top of the page.
Leave a comment and share you favourite game with KD. Today we learnt all about the letter `p'. Can you think of any words that begin with `p'? Leave a comment and share them with KD!
